PIRANHA is a Thrash/Death Metal band from Athens, formed in 1987, starting its career as a Speed Metal band. The Athenians have released a number of demos and an EP in the early 1990s, while their debut album “Reborn” came out in 1998. After that, PIRANHA were “vanished” from the discography, although they were giving some concerts from time to time, only to  reappear in 2015 with their participation in the split CD “Long Live The Past: The Demo Collection”. They made their come back in 2020, releasing their second full-length album “Arise From The Shadows” in 2020, with the title referring somehow to the history of the band itself.

The return of PIRANHA is a genuine, traditional Thrash Metal album with mostly heavy vocals, which contains elements from Death and Speed Metal and is heavy, rough and fast but not monotonous. Although its eight songs follow approximately the same style and rhythm, its compositions possess more melodic passages and special moments that do not allow the album to become boring, keeping the listener’s interest unwavered.

The opening “Nuclear Disease” is a real nuclear explosion that opens the album dynamically, while the next two songs, “Eternal Night” and “Endless Dream”, are worthy follow-ups and continue the bombardment. Next with the re-orchestrated “Reborn” and “Rotten Mind”, songs that were on the band’s first album, presented here differently and perhaps somewhat superior to the originals, with the female vocals in “Reborn” adding points in total. The last three songs are also characteristic samples of the personal style of PIRANHA, with the self-titled track standing out in this last trinity.

PIRANHA is an old and important Greek band in the genre of Thrash/Death Metal and its new work is a very interesting and clear example of this sound. For the younger ones it is a very nice link to a past they did not have the opportunity to know, while it will evoke memories of a glorious past to the older listeners, making the return of the veterans Thrashers rather refreshing.
