Since 2001 when Morten Veland’s MASTERS OF SIRENIA band emerged in the metal world, SIRENIA is one of the most consistent bands of Symphonic Metal. During their career, they release new albums every two or three years and even COVID-19 did not break that circle since “Riddles, Ruins and Revelations” was released in 2021.

Their new album “1977” was released in 26th of May and is the next step towards their new character after “Riddles…”. Veland is clearly trying to bring out a more pop/rock aesthetic from the ‘80s. Therefore the symphonic elements are not as dominant as in previous albums, there are many electronic parts and many songs accent the amazing voice of Emmanuelle Zoldan. The compositions are not that complicated but there are certain parts that give the excellent musician (Veland: guitars, bass – Courbaron: guitars – Brush: drums) the opportunity to show their talent. A very interesting feature is the presence of piano and violin.

Among the 11 songs of the album I would bring to your attention the first three songs, especially “Deadlight” and “Nomadic” for being really catchy and suitable for live shows and sing-alongs. Also, the anticipated ballad “Oceans Away” is a highlight due to Zoldan’s performance that emphasizes the melancholic character of the whole album. To that end, they chose “Twist In My Sobriety” of Tanika Tikaram as their cover bonus track that is 100% fitting to their goal. Last but not least, I must choose the two heaviest songs of the album, “Delirium” and “Fading To The Deepest Black” which are a tribute to the band’s past.

In total, “1977” is a very good album, maybe not so musically but with a character, a clear targeting and hopefully the SIRENIA and Symphonic Metal fans will love it!
