SIX FEET UNDER stands as a quintessential example of a band that faced a decline in quality over the years, transitioning from the success of their first three albums to a string of lackluster releases. Following Chris Barnes’s departure from CANNIBAL CORPSE in 1995 and the subsequent formation of SIX FEET UNDER, their debut album “Haunted” generated significant anticipation, a sentiment further amplified by the release of their stellar second record, “Warpath,” in 1997. However, the departure of Allen West, the band’s guitarist and main songwriter, in the following year marked a turning point in their trajectory, leading to a gradual decline in their output.
Amidst this decline, albums like “Maximum Violence” and “Commandment” managed to stand out amidst the overall mediocrity, albeit without attaining the status of true highlights. Fast forward to 2024, and the announcement of SIX FEET UNDER’s upcoming release, “Killing for Revenge,” comes four years after the Death Metal disappointment of “Nightmares of the Decomposed.”
The initial glimpses of “Killing for Revenge” through its artwork and the singles “Know-Nothing Ingrate” and “Ascension” sparked intrigue, especially considering the involvement of renowned artist Vince Locke, known for his work with CANNIBAL CORPSE. These initial teasers, coupled with the underwhelming reception of “Nightmares of the Decomposed,” instilled hope that SIX FEET UNDER might redeem themselves with this new offering.
With the album now heard in its entirety, it’s apparent that SIX FEET UNDER has achieved a notable feat with “Killing for Revenge,” finally delivering an album that stands as a cohesive and enjoyable work from start to finish. Much credit for this turnaround is owed to the contributions of Jack Owen, formerly of CANNIBAL CORPSE and DEICIDE, who handles the bulk of the songwriting duties. While his presence in the band during the tumultuous period of 2020 may have influenced his approach, Owen’s skill shines through on “Killing for Revenge.”
Musically, the album adheres to the tenets of American Old School Death Metal, eschewing technical or progressive elements in favor of a raw, visceral sound reminiscent of early CANNIBAL CORPSE and SLAYER. Tracks like “Bestial Savagery,” “Compulsive,” and “Judgement Day” exemplify this approach, delivering relentless aggression and breakneck speed. Yet, moments of respite are found in compositions like “Neanderthal” and “Hostility Against Mankind,” which slow the tempo and inject a sense of heaviness and groove into the proceedings.
Of particular note is the return of Chris Barnes, who delivers his trademark guttural vocals with renewed vigor. The production, characterized by its raw and gritty quality, aligns perfectly with SIX FEET UNDER’s musical identity, enhancing the overall experience of the album.
“Killing for Revenge” marks a triumphant return for SIX FEET UNDER, arguably their best offering since “Maximum Violence.” While the album may not break new ground musically, it represents a significant step forward for the band, offering a collection of solid compositions that stand as a stark contrast to their recent output. With this release, SIX FEET UNDER has the opportunity to reclaim their former glory and provide fans with a much-needed return to form.
