Third full length album for the Greeks SCAR OF THE SUN, this time signed by Napalm Records. A very important achievement and many congratulations to the band. The title of the album is “Inertia” and first of all, special mention must be made to the wonderful artwork of the album, as well as to the booklet. A great work of high quality has been made in the graphic part, which predisposes quite positively for the main part, which is none other than the music.
We listen to a diverse set, based on melodic and atmospheric metal. SCAR OF THE SUN put out what I would describe as “controlled aggression”, with the production filtering the groove and the “wild” elements of their sound, while giving a lot of weight to the atmospheric elements and the emotional part of their music. This whole mixture is quite interesting. The sound is flawless, with the production putting out a small digital feeling that blends in harmony with the whole.
I notice that there are a lot of influences from the Swedish sound (the great title track for example reminded me a lot of SOILWORK) while in many parts – especially in the vocals – they reminded me sometimes of PARADISE LOST, period “Symbol Of Life” (great examples are “Quantum Leap Zero I” and “The Fallible Experiment”). All in all, their structure is characterised by short compositions, simple structures and quite “commercial” direction. The whole result may seem trivial to some people in terms of authenticity, and maybe there is a basis for this statement, but personally it doesn’t create a particular problem for me, because the result wins me over. Among the good points of the album is the lyrical direction of the band, in which socio-political elements dominate as I understand.
Apart from the highly promoted “Inertia” and “I Am The Circle”, I singled out the trilogy “Quantum Leap Zero” and “Singularity Collapse”. In conclusion, SCAR OF THE SUN give us a remarkable album. Modern, solid, an interesting combination of atmospheric and rough metal. In fact, if they work a little more on developing a more “authentic” identity, they have the potential to go even further.
