UNDEATH is one of the rising names in the revival of classic pure Death Metal, based in Rochester, NY. In their first album, “Lesions Of A Different Kind”, they played straight New York Death Metal in the footsteps of IMMOLATION and CANNIBAL CORPSE, however in “It’s Time…To Rise From The Grave” things got a bit more complex and technical.
CANNIBAL CORPSE and the subsequent gore theme is present, especially in “Necrobionics” and “Rise From The Grave”, but at the same time we also come across nuggets of the great MORBID ANGEL, especially from the “Altars Of Madness” period. Intricate riffs make their appearance in “Enhancing The Dead”, almost all the pleasant clichés are present and combined with the short duration of the album, the listening is pleasant. The production by Scoops Dardaris is fitting, although slightly more muffled, while the artwork created by the band’s drummer, Matt Browning, is what a fan of the genre would expect to see.
Don’t pass over UNDEATH, especially the fans of the genre. Although young, they seem to assimilate their influences and deliver them without surprising us. Playing firmly on their debut album, they added brutality, speed and technicality and they show that they know exactly what they are doing, by offering us half an hour of good and quality Death Metal!
