Our local scene is tireless despite the many difficulties that occur and constantly produces new interesting albums. One of them is STARTTHEMONKEY from Piraeus who entered the discography with their first release; an EP entitled “The Start Of The Monkey”.
Before anything else, let’s mention a few things about this new and interesting band. STARTTHEMONKEY were created in May 2017. After many changes, their current lineup is Dionysis Kiamos on guitar, George Papaioannou on drums, Manos Analampidakis on bass and finally Iasonas Gousas on vocals. Entering the EP, we will find two compositions in all, the eponymous “The Start Of The Monkey” and the opening track, “Liar”. And that’s all. But what can we understand from an EP of just two pieces?
Its duration, almost fifteen minutes, initially presents us with two large compositions which, in order not to end up boring, should be at least loaded with many alternations and surprises inside them. Do STARTTHEMONKEY manage to do that? We would say yes! Although they are constantly moving in the paths of a more Post Rock direction, their songs enriched with clever ideas and the alternation of vocals from clear to brutal, giving depth to the songs and the meaning they want to pass, making the already small EP flow like water.
Lyrically, STARTTHEMONKEY tells us about modern concerns and contrasts of today’s life, his failed relationships within modern society, with a darkness but also an optimism. Reference should also be made to the strange, but beautiful cover, work of Nikos Kolliniatis. The fans of the genre will enjoy this new release and their upcoming completed work will us even more good quality material from this young and promising band
