In a very awkward moment at the Grammy Awards, a journalist interviewed Courtney LaPlante of SPIRITBOX, believing she was the singer Poppy. The funniest part of the interview is that LaPlante went along with it until the end, pretending to be Poppy and saying:
“I am Poppy, and I am really happy to be here, nominated alongside KNOCKED LOOSE. I really hope we win!”
Throughout the three-minute interview, LaPlante never revealed that the journalist had mistaken her identity, even answering a fan question from someone who also didn’t realize they were speaking to the wrong person. LaPlante knew quite a bit about Poppy’s career and was able to discuss her previous nominations!
Both artists were nominated in the Best Metal Performance category. LaPlante with SPIRITBOX for “Cellar Door” and Poppy for her collaboration with KNOCKED LOOSE on “Suffocate.” In this “surreal” interview, LaPlante stated that no woman had ever won this award and added:
“It’s time for one of us to win, and I hope it’s me or Courtney from SPIRITBOX!”

Following all the buzz around this mix-up, Poppy released a new black-and-white T-shirt inspired by the confusion at this year’s Grammy Awards, featuring the text “Hello, I am Poppy.”
The artist announced the new design online, accompanying her post with the phrase “We are all Poppy.”
