It seems that Sweden’s SORCERER took their time but now have started to offer us new material quite often. They have started their music journey back in 1988 but their first full length album didn’t see the light until the recent 2015. In 2020 they unleashed the excellent “Lamenting Of The Innocents” and now, obviously as some kind of a warm up, they put on the market the EP “Reverence” which consists of just 4 cover versions of some of the favorite songs from the late’70’s and ‘80’s. Two of them are pure classics but in my opinion the other two ones cannot fall into that category, thus the separation. Not that it makes much difference anyway.
Too keep the story short, we start with the super classic “Gates Of Babylon” of RAINBOW, the all time favorite hard rock anthem that SORCERER take in their hands and surely take it one step further making it and epic metal masterpiece. It needs guts to grab with your hands the talents of Dio or Blackmore, let alone both of them in one try, but the success here is absolute. The next one is a surprise for sure, Ok, it is a BLACK SABBATH song, but how many out there are considering the much underrated Tony Martin era ? The Sweds here have surprised us and unburied the lost in time and dust “When Death Calls” and didn’t have to do much to perform it amazingly since this stuff obviously is their kind of style and influence since forever. Another nice surprise comes next with another classic anthem, “Crusader” from SAXON, another tune that totally owned I dare to say, giving it a more slow epic tune and great atmosphere. This mini release will come to its end with one of the best songs from Ozzy Osbourne’s solo career, called “Waiting For Darkness” which is also performed excellent, much close to the original with some personal touches here and there just to make a difference.
So, the boys here are paying a tribute to their music icons while waiting for their next complete work which is still unknown when it will be released. For the moment this EP can be officially obtained only through the main digital platfroms like Itunes etc. but I am pretty sure that a nice 12” vinyl release will be much appreciated from their fans and collectors around.
