2022 is a very important year for one of the biggest Thrash Metal bands of the planet, the German SODOM, as this year marks forty years since they introduced themselves to us with the demo “Witching Metal”. The continuation was extremely impressive and the band managed after seventeen studio albums, nine EPs, three live albums to establish themselves as one of the biggest and most influential bands of the genre, with their leader Tom Angelripper continuing even after so many years and countless difficulties to keep going and thriving creating violent music. Reaching this year, SODOM decided to honor their musical heritage with an anniversary collection – release.
“40 Years At War-The Greatest Hell Of Sodom” consists of seventeen compositions, which cover the whole career of the band but they are not what one would expect to hear from a best of compilation. This is because Angelripper decided to do something different and include songs which are not so popular among the fans and which were not played live by the band. So for example, instead of “Outbreak Of Evil”, “Remember The Fallen”, “Napalm In The Morning”, “Agent Orange” and “Nuclear Winter”, the band chose “Sepulchral Voice”, “Baptism of Fire”, “Electrocution” and “Genocide”. The collection covers their entire discography, starting with the demo era of 1984 and “Victims Of Death” and ending with their most recent album “Genesis XIX”, which was released in 2020.
But in order for a fan to be able to own all the songs that SODOM chose to re-perform, he/she will have to dig deep into his/her pocket to get the box set and not the regular version. The limited edition box set, apart from the album on CD and vinyl, also includes a CD with four compositions, with the song “1982” being released for the first time and the cassette version of the collection with another additional song.
The German Thrash Metal veterans, celebrate the forty years of their career with a sweeping collection, as all the compositions are performed with such fury delivering a raging Thrash result. SODOM sound renewed and their current line-up has given a new power to the band, which is strongly reflected in the reinterpretations of the songs. The compositions have no differentiation regarding the music and the lyrics, compared to their original form, and the only new element is the impeccable production which gives them a new dynamic. SODOM with “40 Years At War-The Greatest Hell Of Sodom”, invite us to celebrate with them in a ruthless and violent Thrash Metal party, as only they know how to mastermind.
