Power Metallers SILENT WINTER from Volos are back, stronger and refreshed, with their third full-length album, “Utopia”, after having been touring all over Greece and Europe for the past few years. So, it was necessary to enrichen their playlist with new material. In fact, judging by the final result of “Utopia”, they didn’t just follow the usual recipe of their first two albums, but they took it a step further, experimented, added new elements to their compositions and finally presented us with their best album (until the next one).

There are certainly songs that can be characterized as classic SILENT WINTER, such as the speedy “We Burn The Future” with which they open the album or the absolutely concert-like “Hellstorm” which is inspired by the deadly floods of 2023 inMagnesia. After that, the small but distinct experimentations begin, such as in “Hands Held High” which is a MANOWAR-like ballad or “Silent Shadows” with the NIGHTWISH intro that follows symphonic paths. In the same spirit, Mike Livas on vocals uses the full range of his voice more than ever. Whether with his classic Power Metal screams or in the most melodic moments such as in the excellent ballad “Heart Is A Lonely Hunter”. Finally, we don’t need to say much about the band’s musicians, who we have known for several years and display a coherence that you don’t easily find in other bands. I will only focus on the new member, Maria Moscheta, on the keyboards, giving a different feel and depth to many of the songs.

What is important for a band is consistency and a steady upward career. SILENT WINTER is an example to follow in this regard, since their essentially stable lineup from 2020 onwards (the only change being the addition of Mosheta this year) as well as the vision and personal work of Kyriakos Balanos are a guarantee of quality. “Utopia” is an album that refreshes the domestic, and not only, Power Metal scene and gives them the necessary fuel to do what they love even better.
