Black Metal, like all subgenres of our favorite music, has its own branches that separate one Black Metal band from another. There is the “raw”, violent Black Metal and there is also the one that is more melodic, it builds on the atmosphere that it slowly creates, sometimes with many Ambient elements.
The Canadians SERMENT from Quebec (hence the French), is a one-man band, side project of FORTERESSE’s guitarist and bassist Moribond. Which style from the above did SERMENT choose for this first record? Essentially none, or rather both! In the forty minutes of their “Chante, ô Flamme De La Liberté” album, we see in addition to the expected influences from the main band of the creator, some elements from DARKTHRONE, some from EMPEROR and many atmospheric and melodic elements that would refer to AGALLOCH.
The production is very good, the instruments, all played (obviously) by Moribond, are exactly where they should be, with the vocals somewhere between the fogs that emerges in places from the album, the icy winds and the blizzards in which the album travels you to, they offer the exceptional atmosphere, tying very nicely with everything.
Overall, after emphasizing how well the French fit into Black Metal, we will say that this is a very beautiful debut album for SERMENT, maybe a little short in duration but full of beautiful music, from extremely aggressive riffs to melodies capable of traveling the listener.
