It was February of 2020 and SEPULTURA have just released their decent new album “Quadra”. While they prepare the promotional tour, the pandemic story breaks out worldwide, locking everyone at home. The Brazilians however do not put it down, trying to keep in touch with the fans through a podcast, in which they answered questions from metalheads, presenting at the same time live songs from their huge back-catalogue. The special detail about this podcast was that they had well-known musicians of Metal music as guests, who participated in the performance of the compositions.
So, as the situation with the virus is still on, SEPULTURA chose some of these live stream performances, presenting us through the collection “SepulQuarta”. The release includes a total of 16 songs covering from “Beneath the Remains” to the recent “Quadra” records, with the absence of compositions from “Arise” being notable, (although during the podcasts they had presented songs from this album, ultimately they did not include them in “SepulQuarta”).
As I mentioned earlier, in each song there is a different guest, so I will mention some of them: David Ellefson (ex-MEGADETH), Scott Ian (ANTHRAX), Phil Rind (SACRED REICH), Jason Newstead (ex- METALLICA), Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT), Rob Cavestany (DEATH ANGEL), Devin Townsend.
Regarding the recordings now, as expected they are flawless with great sound and dynamics (something normal since the sound was remixed and processed in the studio). Derrick Green’s performance in songs from the Cavalera era sounds quite remarkable, bringing out an aggressive feeling. The release is closing with the cover of MOTORHEAD’s “Orgasmatron” and Phil Campbell’s participation.
Making a summary, obviously this release has absolutely no reason to exist. I personally believe that it is another attempt of a band to grab a few euros more from the fans. I hope this funny story with the cancellation of concerts will end quickly because the last year we have been chocking with meaningless releases coming from live stream performances and records as “SepulQuarta”. It would decent for the bands to sit down and write some new material, in case they want to release something new.
