The Finnish Black metallers SARGEIST, just about one year after their last album “Unbound”, are back with the “Death Veneration” EP. This release includes 4 compositions, 3 are sessions of “Unbound” and the track “Lunar Curse”. This one was originally written by Shatraug (the only remaining original member of SARGEIST) in 1998 and later was included in the SARGEIST/FUNERAL ELEGY split from 2004. All songs of “Death Veneration” were originally intended to be used in two split albums but Shatraug decided to release them as one EP.
The sound and the production of “Death Veneration” have several similarities with those in “Unbound”. The compositions are aggressive and fast. While listening to this EP you feel a furious force grabbing and drifting you. Furious Black Metal combined with the well-known haunting melodies of SARGEIST and inhumane screams of Profundus on vocals. We can also feel some Thrash touches in the songs that contribute to the whole savagery.
The EP starts off quite strong with “To Make Wolves Of Men” which is a Black Metal rocket ready to blast everything in its path, next track is “Feast On Astral Blood” which continues in the same musical Black Metal path although at some point it gets monotonous, maybe because of its duration. Third song is “Lunar Curse” and you immediately realize the influence of the Scandinavian scene at the time it was written, dramatic with its melody creating a melancholic atmosphere. Last song is the title track, wild and chaotic, ends this dark delightful hearing of “Death Veneration” leaving us with a feeling of Black Metal rage.
SARGEIST’s ability to combine cruelty, melody and speed is evident in “Death Veneration”. It is impressive that the band besides the crystal production sounds so brutal. SARGEIST remains consistent and after the great “Unbound” offer us another high quality Black Metal release with hellish vocals and rabid riffing. “Death Veneration” deserves to be in your Black Metal collection.
