The Danes PYRAMAZE are a melodic power metal band with some progressive influences and many (many) choral and melodic elements in their music. For one and only of the band’s six albums, “Immortal”, behind the microphone was Matt Barlow, former ICED EARTH singer, and although his presence on the band was short-lived, it was perhaps one of the reasons for their rise in fame.
The sixth work of PYRAMAZE is called “Epitaph”. It moves in the most classic paths of the band’s sound, as they have been defined in the last three works, with many pompous melodies, almost permanent use of choir and of course all the speedy and catchy riffs that can accompany a classic Power Metal disc. The release of the album was preceded by three singles, “A Stroke Of Magic”, “World Foregone” and “Particle”, which together with “Steal My Crown” and the twelve-minute epic “The Time Traveler” that closes the album with guest musicians Matt Barlow and Lance King , are also the best songs in a set of twelve compositions.
The production of the album is very good, perhaps too meticulous, quite sophisticated and catches the listener’s attention. The songs, both those mentioned and as a whole, seem to follow a specific recipe, a specific structure. As a result they stay in your mind, because to some extent they are inspiring, but on the other hand you are given the impression of repetitive patterns. Yes, their recipe is tried and tested and the band seems to have both inspiration and passion, but this inescapable path they chose to follow in all their compositions, somewhere becomes tedious and the good elements in the album, are drown in a uniformity which disserves them.
“Epitaph” is not a bad record, it will entertain the listener and leave him with a nice “taste” at the end, but so much pretence in both the production and the writing of the songs, maybe in the end underestimates a band that can definitely be more experimental and daring.
