OBSCURA’s latest release, “A Sonication”, marks an intriguing chapter for the German technical Death Metal outfit. With a revamped lineup, the band takes a notable turn toward a more melodic Death Metal sound, reminiscent of the iconic DARK TRANQUILLITYamong the more classic influencesof DEATH and CYNIC. The album features a relentless barrage of fast-paced tracks, with only a couple of slower, atmospheric moments, such as the second single “Evenfall,” which adds a welcome touch of variety. This shift in direction highlights the band’s versatility and willingness to explore beyond their usual technical mastery.
One of the album’s strongest attributes is its concise tracklist and runtime, ensuring the listener remains engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The variety on display is commendable, with a mix of blistering fast tracks, slower atmospheric pieces, an instrumental interlude, and dynamic vocals that range from traditional Swedish-style growls to brutal death metal roars. The technical prowess of the band is undeniable, and the guitar solos, in particular, are nothing short of breathtaking. However, despite these strengths, the songwriting often falls into formulaic patterns. While a few riffs stand out, many feel generic and forgettable, overshadowed by the focus on intricate solos. This imbalance leaves the melodies lacking the memorability needed to elevate the album to greatness.
The production, handled by the legendary Fredrik Nordström at Fredman Studios, adds a polished and professional sheen to the album, enhancing its overall quality. Yet, despite the high-caliber performances and top-tier production, “A Sonication” doesn’t fully capitalize on its potential. OBSCURA leans heavily on speed and technicality, which, while impressive, limits their ability to craft songs that breathe and leave a lasting impression. Ultimately, while the album is a solid effort showcasing the talent of its musicians, it misses the mark in creating truly standout moments that linger in the listener’s mind.
