Scandinavia musically has displayed a lot of Black Metal, so Finland could not be an exception by presenting us the sixth-membered OBCASCUS from Kuopio with their first full-length album “Omega Prophet”, having released in 2018 their only demo “Enslaver’s Cross”.
With its black-and-white cover predisposing for its content, “Omega Prophet” although meticulous in terms of production, is actually closer to what we would call a traditional Black Metal sound with the atmosphere gradually being built and darkness prevailing. Black Metal is by nature atmospheric and here we have a mystical atmosphere with heavy melodies and evocative vocals and although traditional in their style, all seven compositions display many melodic passages but without taking the main role. The one and a half minute introduction is enough to pique your interest, while the opening “Wishgranter” confirms the feeling that the following album is really good, full of blastbeats, keys and guitars that keep the interest undiminished.
It is a fact that in recent years many bands, especially in the field of Black Metal, are growing like mushrooms constantly. Some release an album and disappear, others continue. Some have something very good to offer and some just repeat familiar things. OBCASCUS with “Omega Prophet” present one of these quality works and while they are not completely original by reminding several importants bands of the genre, especially early DIMMU BORGIR, the musical trip offered is one of those that you would want to repeat. I do not know if OBCASCUS came to stay or they are another shooting star, but they may have a lot to offer.
