When two talented musicians combine their powers, then the result is certainly interesting as well. NIGHTFELL is the child of 2 different worlds – Hardcore/Crust as Todd Burdette played through bands like TRAGEDY and HIS HERO IS GONE, and extreme Metal as drummer Tim Call has explored through bands like THE HOWLING WIND, MOURNFULL CONGREGATION etc.

Inside their effort entitled “A Sanity Deranged”, we meet a Blackened Doom Death Metal album with several Crust influences that are mostly found in the guitar leads of Burdette. The album consists of 5 songs and a small instrumental. The compositions of “A Sanity Deranged” range from slow-drown Doom Metal to mid-tempo Black and Death Metal. In the songs you can hear influences by early PARADISE LOST, BATHORY and even riffs similar to BOLT THROWER. The vocals are full of suffocating despair and they add to the dark atmosphere of the album that personally takes me back to the 90s where this sound reached its popularity zenith. The songs have several changes in rhythm to keep you engaged and many interesting ideas but in the end, they are not presenting something that you’ve never heard before. The production of the album is excellent and adds to the massive sound of the band without being to the expense of the instruments which all can be heard crystal clear. The impeccable drumming of Tim Call as well as the “mournful” melodies of Todd Burdette are definitely the highlight of the album and those of you who indulge in slow, mid-tempo old school sounds will be definitely more than satisfied with this release.
