In an open letter, former NEVERMORE members Van Williams and Jeff Loomis announced their intention to embark on a new chapter for the historic band. A teaser video released a few days ago elicited mixed emotions among fans, with the musicians openly addressing both the support and criticism they received. One major reaction concerned the absence of Jim Sheppard from their plans. According to Williams, the lack of communication with Jim for years made collaboration impossible.

Van Williams wrote:

«Some consider it disrespectful that we didn’t inform Jim about our plans. While it may not have been the most ideal approach, the reality is that we haven’t been in contact with Jim for years. We felt that sometimes, for the sake of a fresh start, it’s necessary to move beyond relationships that might not favor growth or new beginnings. We made this decision with the intention of honoring the band’s legacy while moving forward in a way that felt right at the time. That being said, we wish him good health and he is free to follow any path he chooses.»

Williams explains that his return to NEVERMORE is personal. The band was his dream from the start, but the group dynamics eroded over time, leading to a disappointing state. The letter becomes deeply personal as Williams shares his family’s ordeal when his wife was diagnosed with cancer and later passed away.

He continued:

«As for why I’m returning to NEVERMORE, it’s simple. This band has always been my dream. Over the years, we created incredible music and beautiful memories together. But over time, things spiraled out of control… trust, respect, and the joy of it all began to disappear. The final breaking point came during our last European tour with SYMPHONY X, after which it became clear that we couldn’t continue as we were. Jeff and I went one way, Warrel and Jim another. There was no reconciliation. Warrel moved to Brazil, Jim retreated to Alaska, and years passed without any contact.

Meanwhile, my personal life took a devastating turn when my wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. We did everything we could to create a sense of normalcy for our young son and tried to make her as comfortable as possible. Warrel would occasionally call from Brazil, and while we exchanged kind words during those calls, it didn’t erase the past. Dore passed away in 2020, and her loss devastated me and my son—we still feel her absence.»

Addressing accusations that this return is financially motivated, Williams clarifies that musicians of their level do not choose this career for money. Their return to NEVERMORE is based on the desire to continue their creative journey. They also announce that they are looking for new members, not to replace Dane, but to find a vocalist who will honor his work while adding their own touch.

Van Williams concludes his statement as follows:

«For those calling this a “cash grab,” I disagree. Most musicians don’t do this for the money. We’ve spent countless hours over the years sweating, rehearsing, playing, and recording simply because we love it. If money comes, great, but that was never the goal.

Jeff and I want to honor the legacy of NEVERMORE by finding musicians who can respect what Warrel and Jim brought to the band while helping us build a new chapter. This isn’t about replacing Warrel. No one can. But it’s about finding someone who can honor his work while bringing something new. If we find the right vocalist and bassist, this new chapter could be something truly special. This won’t be a cover band or a tribute act. It will be the next evolution of what we call NEVERMORE. I look forward to seeing you all again.»

Jeff Loomis, the band’s guitarist, followed up with his own statement in support of Van Williams’ remarks, as well as providing details on how to participate in the NEVERMORE auditions for selecting a new vocalist and bassist for the group.

Jeff Loomis’ response-invitation began as follows:

«I fully agree with Van’s statement. It’s true that NEVERMORE’s history has been filled with highs and lows. I prefer to remember the good times, and together with Van, we’re continuing to carry the band’s torch and elevate it to a new level. No one can replace Warrel Dane. We are looking for someone who can perform NEVERMORE’s older songs in their own style while also bringing something fresh and invigorating to the band’s next chapter.

With that in mind, we are launching a WORLDWIDE SEARCH for two exceptional musicians: a lead vocalist and a bassist who will join the band and help us move our legacy forward. The position of the second guitarist has already been filled, but more information will be revealed soon in a future update!

We’re searching for a vocalist capable of delivering a wide range of tones and emotions with authenticity. They should handle high and low notes with ease, blending power and sensitivity depending on the song’s demands. Expressive depth and stage presence that connects with the audience are essential.

We are looking for a bassist who understands how to create depth and rhythm in NEVERMORE’s arrangements with precision and groove. The ability to provide backing vocals would be a significant advantage.»

Vocalists are invited to perform the tracks «Born» and «Sentient 6» from This Godless Endeavor, showcasing both technical skill and emotional depth. Bassists, on the other hand, are required to perform «Enemies of Reality» and «Inside Four Walls» with precision and rhythmic cohesion. All interested candidates can submit their audition videos via a private YouTube link to the band’s email address (officialnevermoreinfo@gmail.com).

We eagerly await to see what 2025 has in store for NEVERMORE and their new lineup!
