There are a lot of “one man” projects in extreme metal scene and more specific in Black Metal scene but we’ve rarely seen “one woman” projects. The only ones that come to my mind is SYLVAINE and early MYRKUR (of course it is not the propper time and space to discuss about the absence of such projects). Among these projects mentioned above, there comes a new one, MOONSCAR, led by a young talented lady, Maria Brkc, who is coming from Northern Greece and more specific from Thessaloniki. As I know, this is the first similar project coming from Greece.
“Blood Moon” is the first record attempt without the release of an EP or even a demo recording, fact that indicates guts and a courageous lack of consciousness about the reaction of Black Metal audience. In the six songs that consist “Blood Moon” we will not listen to an innovative trend or something new infiltrated with exotic elements. On the other hand, we will listen to early Atmospheric Black Metal which doesn’t expatiate or “railroad” enough. While hearing this album, the first band that comes to my mind is LIMBONIC ART (without being so majestic) and CRADLE OF FILTH (with less symphonic and pompous moments), that I must admit made me more receptive. In almost 35 minutes the atmospheric moments succeed the quick, almost thrashy riffing and the keyboards are put there to form a solid base, without being “cartoonish” ,just like the vocals, the classic screams of the genre without being funny or hysteric.
Maria Brkc is also responsible for the production which is quite good, however the tune of “drumming” is so plastic that loses points at the final outcome. At least in the digital form, but for the vinyl release George Emmanouil (ex-ROTTING CHRIST, LUCIFERS CHILD) was called to assist, so I am hoping for a more complete listening experience. One thing that is out of discussion is the passion, the effort and the huge amount of love that armed this lady and decided to move out of the box, to depend to no one than herself and to grant us her feelings and thoughts with the release of “Blood Moon”. As a listener, I hope that more artists will follow the example of MOONSCAR and present us more remarkable music.
