It’s always a positive sign when the Greek music scene remains active, and the recent release of IGNOMINOUS’ album «Dawn With No Light» is another testament to this dynamism. IGNOMINOUS was formed in 2020 and consists of experienced musicians: bassist Anestis Nekhromancer (TERRORDROME, TWILIGHT, OBSCENE, MEDIEVAL), guitarist and vocalist Chris (formerly of REGENT), and drummer Billy Vongaar (TERRORDROME, TWILIGHT, DISEMBOWEL, YOTH IRIA, HEAD CLEANER). Despite the pandemic challenges and Anestis’ severe health issues due to Covid, the band pushed through, completing eight powerful tracks that make up their debut album, «Dawn With No Light». The album was recorded at Stone Studios and mastered at Suncord Studios.
While IGNOMINOUS is a new band, the musicians are veterans of the local scene, which perhaps explains why «Dawn With No Light» sticks to familiar and safe paths of old-school Black Metal. Despite the intensity the album aims to convey, the tracks don’t deviate from the typical characteristics of the genre and don’t bring anything particularly new to the table.
Despite their strong start with the titular single, IGNOMINOUS manages to maintain a fairly balanced sound without excess. The nearly 10,000 views of «Dawn With No Light» on YouTube show that there’s interest from the audience, but this release might serve more as a first step rather than something that will make a significant impact on the scene. With a toned-down and easy-to-digest black metal sound, the album offers a solid introduction for those wanting to explore the Greek sound of the genre without diving into something too heavy or complex.
Overall, «Dawn With No Light» offers a good opportunity for someone looking to begin their exploration of the Greek Black Metal scene. It’s not something that will leave you in awe, but it’s an honest record that you can easily enjoy, especially if you’re a fan of classic bands. It has the necessary melodic atmosphere to keep your interest, though it doesn’t reach the level of true innovation.
Ideal for a laid-back afternoon or as a first taste of Greek Black Metal, «Dawn With No Light» is a solid piece of work that can set the mood, without aiming for the top of the scene.
