HEX come from the land of Basques and more specifically from Bilbao, Spain. The band was founded in 2012 as a one-man act by Adolpho WB. Afterwards they released two full length albums, “Deadly Sin” in 2014 and “God Ηas Νo Name” in 2019, in digital format only. Now they are releasing this EP with a new lineup. “Behold The Unlighted” contains three long songs and thankfully, this time it was also released in physical CD format, limited to 500 copies.
What HEX play and what their influences are, is evident from the first notes of the opening track, “As Darkness Descent Upon You”. Genuine Doom/Death Metal with basic influences of the early 90s and of BOLT THROWER, PARADISE LOST (of the first album), GOREFEST, ASPHYX! Extremely harsh vocals, hard guitars, very heavy bass, as well as a clean-strong but above all massive production! The same pattern continues in the other two songs, “Impending Doom Towards Darkness” and “And Thus Spoke Darkness”, including clean vocals in certain parts, along with some atmospheric elements that give a variety to the whole outcome. Lyrically, the Basks are referring to darkness (the word is used in all 3 titles of their songs), but also against God.
To sum up, I believe that this band has a great future. As a disadvantage I would put the completely common name (there are a lot of bands that have already chosen it), which might be a hindrance for them to be taken over by a bigger label! In addition, I would like more than 3 songs to get a full picture of how far they can go. However, they are definitely worth your attention!!
