Belgian Βlack Metallers HEINOUS may have been formed quite recently, in 2018. However, in their lineup they have a Black Metal veteran, quite familiar to us. I am speaking for Lord Sabathan and if the name doesn’t remind you anything, then the band ENTHRONED might tell you something. Mr. L.S. was ENTHRONED’s founding member and responsible among others for the vocals and the bass of the most famous Belgian Black Metal band from 1993 to 2006. Their albums “Prophecies of Pagan Fire”, “Towards the Skullthrone of Satan” and “The Apocalypse Manifesto” are highlights of the second Black Metal wave. So now, L.S. continues with HEINOUS and also has with him Pz. Kpfw, drummer in POSSESION (another Belgium’s famous Black Metal band).
HEINOUS released “Demo I” in 2019 and a few months later a 7” EP entitled “Lucifer Vult”. So this year, New Era Productions, decided to release HEINOUS’s two releases in one cd. The sound of HEINOUS has its roots deep in old School Black Metal of early 90’s, grafted with the rawness of Finnish and French Black Metal scene. In “Demo I” there is a relentless rage as the songs are aggressive and fast with the favorite Black Metal raw sound of the guitars. As for demo’s production, it is poor as usual. Of course the not so good production exudes a charmingly dangerous nostalgia of the early Black Metal sound and enhances the old school atmosphere. As for the two songs of “Lucifer Vult”, the sound does not have any difference compared to the demo, straight forward pure Black Metal with better production.
HEINOUS musical style and sound is hardly original but the Belgians have good songwriting by giving their personal touch on the compositions. “Gospels of Insanity” is addressed to those who like underground Black Metal mayhem and those who want their Black Metal “dangerous” and raw, the “old way”. It is also a good opportunity for all fans of this particular sound to find a band that stands out in one of the most upcoming Black Metal scenes worldwide.
