On Saturday, December 21st 2024, we had the honor to welcome to Athens one of the hottest names in the global Grindcore scene, and this is no other than GUTALAX from Czech Republic. Their energy was as fiery as a fresh production of human excretion! In the wisest choice, the role of opening act was taken on by the local Death/Grind heroes MORTAL TORMENT, who proved to be an excellent addition to the line-up. Their music was quite close to GUTALAX’s, much more brutal, of course, while they shared a similar sense of humor, without adopting the shitty approach of the Czechs.
Unfortunately, I arrived at Gagarin around 21:20, a bit after the start of MORTAL TORMENT’s set, who were already on stage, in high energy, warming up the crowd. The venue was already nearly full, and the crowd was enjoying the high-octane Death Metal from the band.
Speaking of the crowd, it’s worth noting that the Metal audience appeared in attire that perfectly suited the vibe of the concert, resembling crowds from foreign festivals such as Obscene Extreme. Ballet dancers, masks, costumes, toilet brushes, toilet paper, inflatable life jackets, and various other accessories were already scattered across Gagarin, creating an atmosphere that felt like an explosive party.
The performance of MORTAL TORMENT was excellent, with the frontman Yiannis Nakos distributing plenty of dark humor before each song, closing with an amazing cover of INTERACITY and their song “Visions of Coming Apocalypse”, before bidding farewell to the crowd and leave the stage.
After a few minutes of setup for the headliners of the night, with the band’s banner and the necessary chemical toilets taking their place on stage, GUTALAX appeared without their costumes for a very brief soundcheck. After playing a few seconds, Maty informed us that this was the last track and thanked us for coming, giving us a first taste of what was to follow…
Having seen GUTALAX twice this year, I was already prepared for what was about to happen. And as I expected, around 15 minutes past 10, the intro of Baywatch sounded, and the party started with “Anus Nakus”. “Poopcorn”, “Robocock”, “Fart and Furious”, and Gagarin turned into a wild arena. For the next hour, whatever happened at Gagarin, stayed at Gagarin, as what went down had no precedent. Crowd surfing was in full force, chemical toilets made stage diving and crowd surfing, people jumping from the chemical toilets to climb on stage, toilet paper flying in the air, and inflatable dolls that were named Chuck Norris.
The closing of the concert (after an hour), found the crowd with huge smiles on their faces, with many having grabbed GUTALAX merch, which literally disappeared. Gagarin resembled a bombed-out landscape – the floor was covered with various accessories and the remnants of the concert. The night was a true Grindcore celebration that will be unforgettable for all who attended.
