FUATH may not sound familiar to many, but the band’s only member Andy Marshall and SAOR are very well known. FUATH is therefore Andy Marshall’s personal project, which was formed in 2015 and the same year they released their debut album entitled “I”. In 2021, they return with their second full length “II” by presenting us a slightly wilder side.
The fact is that SAOR and Andy have left their mark on Atmospheric Black Metal, so FUATH who play a familiar musical style, what more can they offer us?? The answer is not so much, because the only difference here is that FUATH sounds more “frozen” and more “primitive” compared to SAOR without escaping the boundaries of Atmospheric Black Metal. This is mainly because of the influences of the Norwegian Black Metal scene, which make their appearance more obvious here by “dressing” the compositions and driving the sound. The songs move mainly at slow and mid-tempo rhythm with a melancholic atmosphere, melodies and an emotional tone on the guitar. So, musically the album continues from where the debut stopped, without offering us anything different to pique our interest and our attention.
If the album had not been released by this musician, it would have gone completely unnoticed as it does not offer anything new and cannot stand out from the vast majority of atmospheric Black Metal releases. The truth is that I find no reason for the existence of this project, as he could comfortably add those elements to SAOR’s sound. Of course, there may be factors that might prevent him from doing that and he applies that elements in FUATH. In conclusion, listen to the album and I am sure that fans of this sound will like it, but they will hardly revisit “II” after few listenings.
