FIREWING is a US-based Symphonic Prog-Power Metal band founded by the Brazilian guitarist Caio Kehyayan. “Resurrection” is their debut album and features some guest musicians, including Bill Hudson (NORTHTALE), Jenn Sakura (AVERSED) and Haydée Irizarry (CARNIVORA) among others.
The band combines technical elements of Heavy Metal with melodic orchestrations and prog elements with the sound of today’s symphonic Metal. Listening to the album, many elements from major European bands of the genre come to mind, most notably the Italians RHAPSODY who seem to be a key influence not only on the sound but also on the thematology and artwork that accompanies their album but also their compatriots KAMELOT.
FIREWING, try in their sound in addition to symphonic elements to pass a progressive style, which will remind DREAM THEATER to the listener, not only from the guitar themes that shout the name of John Petrucci but also from the vocals of Airton Araujo who many times sounds very close to James LaBrie, at least with the tone he tries to give to his voice and the way he interprets.
“Resurrection” is not bad, being the band’s first attempt. It is an album that shows some thoughts, some ideas of the band, which are still trying to find its own identity, its own steps that will determine its path. For the time being, it seems to be following paths that give the group security in these first steps, with its own personality not being easily perceived.
In a set of fourteen songs, one of which is an introduction (again in the style of RHAPSODY) and one is the epilogue, we have some beautiful songs, divided into chapters that tell a concept story, with the three main chapters standing out, while the two parts of “Tales Of Ember & Vishap” reinforce the option that if the band finds its identity, it will give beautiful things to the genre it represents. Until then, we have a satisfactory first attempt.
