ENTRAILS is a band who comes from Linnyd, a picturesque touristic village near the city of Kalmar, at the Swedish south part. It was founded in 1990 and until 1998 (the year that they broke up), they didn’t release any stuff. At 2008 Jimmy, the mainman of the band, announced that he will reform the band and will record again all the old songs that hadn’t been released. Since 2008 ENTRAILS have released five full length albums and several demos and splits.”Rise Of The Reaper” is their sixth album and the one that is being reviewed here!
What do we hear in “Rise Of The Reaper”? Death metal the way that ENTOMBED taught us, with some grunts of melodic AT THE GATES. The album starts with a cinematic introduction which guides us to the first song “For Hell” where we can hear groove guitars, growling vocals and upbeat drumming. The next song is “Miscreation” which continues to develop the cinematic introduction and gives some epic/power moments with “arena” refrain and fiery guitars. There are of course moments of ruthless and savage headbanging such as in “For Whom The Head Rolls” (direct reference to METALLICA).The album comes to an end with “Cathedral Of Pain” ,a seven minutes sluggish epic that pulls you down deeper into the abyss. The outro is trying to be a relief valve from what you have experienced during the hearing of the disk.
The disk was mixed and mastered at Unisound Studios by mastermind Dan Swano. That’s why we can hear every detail of the songs and admire the purity of the recording. ENTRAILS in this album entwine quite a few elements from both Stockholm and Gothenburg sound plus keeping their own character and give us a record who can be heard without a break. Without having special guests, ENTRAILS are showing us the way that Swedish death metal is played. Groove guitars, vocals inspired by L.G.Petrov, stormy drumming, excitement, love and passion for what they are doing are the elements of success. For all the death metal fans “Rise of The Reaper “ is an honest record which deserves and must be heard.
