After a five-year hiatus, ALCEST return with their album «Les Chants de l’Aurore», embracing a different direction compared to their previous work, «Spiritual Instinct», which I personally consider to be exceptional. My first encounter with their music was back in 2009, when they released the unique split with DES DISCRETS, and ever since, I have followed their journey closely.
«Les Chants de l’Aurore» delivers 44 minutes of fresh material from the French band. For many, this group holds a special place in their hearts, and each new album is a significant event, whether for shoegaze enthusiasts or those seeking creative music. The question that arises is whether their new endeavor meets expectations.
In my opinion, the answer is undoubtedly positive. However, if you prefer their darker sound from previous works, as I do, you might need to spend some time fully grasping «Les Chants de l’Aurore»—but it is certainly worth the effort.
Even though shoegaze isn’t typically my favorite genre, ALCEST have mastered the art of creating compositions that leave a lasting impression. Starting with black metal, they evolved into blackgaze and post-rock, reaching new heights of creativity. Their new album evokes memories of 2014’s «Shelter», yet maintains its own distinct identity, offering an experience filled with light and atmosphere.
ALCEST possess a unique ability to craft music that exudes optimism and brightness, while simultaneously carrying an underlying sadness that adds emotional depth to their compositions. Their music is a journey through vivid melodies and rich soundscapes, providing serenity and calm, while stirring complex emotions.
The vocals are clear and ethereal, brimming with emotion, and in some parts, harsher vocals appear, adding intensity and breathing life into the listening experience. Although these moments are sparse, they are impactful and executed exceptionally well when they do appear.
«Les Chants de l’Aurore» stands as one of ALCEST’s really good albums, adding to their commendable discography. The album’s signature atmosphere offers an experience imbued with hope and positive energy, while the hint of sorrow lends it depth and emotional resonance.
Without a doubt, «Les Chants de l’Aurore» worths a listen!
