The Belgian Death/Grind Metallers ABORTED ware formed in 1995 and are a very active band of the genre as they have released ten full-length albums, several EPs and splits. ABORTED are continuing in 2020 this lengthy tradition, during which, following the release of an album, comes a new EP. So, two years after their last album, titled “Terrorvision”, they return with the limited EP “La Grande Mascarade”.
In their new EP, ABORTED offer us three compositions of Brutal Death Metal that in some parts touches the limits of Grind Metal. “La Grande Mascarade” is characterized by a furious and aggressive feeling. The drums are hammering mercilessly, Sven de Caluwé’s vocals are deep and brutal growls, while the torrential guitars have the main role with shredding riffs (technical in some parts), which at times remind us DYING FETUS-like “paranoid” leads. The furious rhythm of ABORTED is interrupted only during the excellent solos (in which the band demonstrates its technical ability) and during some ambient breakdowns which are matching perfectly with the compositions and help them avoid sounding monotonous. Furthermore, this is the first album featuring ABORTED’s new guitarist Harrison Patuto and his influence is clearly visible on the tighter riffs and solos on each of the tracks.
The 12 minutes duration of “La Grande Mascarade” is exactly what every Brutal Death metal fan desires. ABORTED continues their ascending course with another remarkable release and prove that in the last ten years they are worthy holders of a place among the top bands of Brutal Death Metal. Also “La Grande Mascarade” is a perfect opportunity for someone, who is not familiar with any of band’s previous releases to check them out.
