DREAMLONGDEAD is a domestic band based in Athens, formed in 2011. Their new album is entitled “Derelict”, being the fourth full-length album in the band’s discography. Their previous album “Umbra” was released in 2018, making a significant impact within the local extreme Metal underground scene. It is worth noting that, compared to their previous release, there have been some lineup changes. There are new additions on drums, guitar, and keyboards, joining Giannis Pousios (vocals), Leonidas Vranas (bass) and Tasos Palaiologos (vocals/guitars) who are the founding members of the band.
The album overflows with a suffocating atmosphere, featuring riffs that balance between heavy Doom and oppressive Death Metal. The use of mid-tempo rhythms, combined with Giannis Pousios’ guttural screams, creates a sense of despair and decay, perfectly reflecting the album’s title. The lineup changes, bring a fresh dynamic, adding complexity to the sound. The keyboards, at times, introduce a haunting atmosphere without overshadowing the riffs, which remain the core of the compositions.
The production maintains the rawness that characterizes the underground Metal scene, while remaining clear enough to highlight the intricate details of the compositions. Pousios’ vocals dominate with an intensity that suggests a personal connection to the album’s themes. Leonidas Vranos and Tasos Palaiologos provide stability to the band’s sound, while the new additions bring fresh energy to the mix.
“Derelict” is an album that embodies decay, loneliness, and isolation, concepts masterfully conveyed through its musical character. DREAMLONGDEAD continue to evolve their sound while staying true to their roots. This album is an outstanding example of the domestic Doom/Death Metal scene that does not go unnoticed. If you are a fan of the Doom/Death Metal sound, and particularly of the legendary AUTOPSY, “Derelict” is worth exploring in depth, as each audition reveals new details!
