This year brought us a Greek-Brazilian alliance between our own LUCIFER’S CHILD and the Brazilian cult Black Metallers MYSTIFIER. The result of this alliance is the release of “Under Satan’s Wrath” split. MYSTIFIER were formed in 1989 and have a highly respected name in the underground scene, having released five albums to date. In fact, the most recent and excellent “Protogoni Mavri Magiki Dynasteia”, was released in 2019 after an 18-year hiatus! Regarding LUCIFER’S CHILD, they were formed in 2013 and they have two full length albums to their credit, with George Emmanuel (former ROTTING CHRIST, NECROMANTIA) in their ranks.
Each band participates with two compositions and a cover. The Brazilians follow their classic old school paths, offering us two decent compositions of Latin American Black Metal, with “Under Inhumane Evil Spells” moving in a slower and more melodic rhythm, while “Death Beyond Holy Creation” is a continuous attack from the first to the last minute. The cover they chose to present us is SAMAEL’s “Worship Her”, which they faithfully render with the original, without any particular variation.
LUCIFER’S CHILD participate with “Satan’s Wrath” and “Nova Tenebris”, and prove that the flame of their last album “The Order”, still burns with intensity. The compositions sweep everything in their path and the band sounds in great shape, with “Nova Tenebris” being more melodic and with a darker atmosphere. So with a more modern Black Metal sound compared to MYSTIFIER (something completely normal and logical) and an excellent production, the Greek band delivers two great songs. As for the cover, LUCIFER’S CHILD chose to pay tribute to the great Quorthon, covering BATHORY’s “Enter the Eternal Fire” in an excellent way.
“Under Satan’s Wrath” could be characterized as a release that presents two different generations of the underground Black Metal scene, as we have an extreme alliance between the Brazilian veterans MYSTIFIER and the Greeks LUCIFER’S CHILD with their “youthful” mood and appetite for creation. This can be easily heard in the songs as the Brazilians follow their classic paths with a “typical” mood, while the Greeks sound like a car going downhill with broken brakes, literally sweeping everything in its path. So those of you who are fans of Black Metal, you shouldn’t skip this release as we are dealing with one of the best splits released lately.
