If you are wondering for the best way to celebrate the completion of a year concerning a live release, the Germans DESTRUCTION have the answer! A new live album!! When I saw the newsletter I thought “WTF???”. I still remember my review for last year’s “Born To Thrash – Live In Germany” so for a moment I was a little desperate, but as an old fan, I had no problem dealing with this record as well.
First of all, let’s say that DESTRUCTION is now in another company. Also that the last two years the band is again a quartet, as the guitarist Damir Eskic (also in GONOREAS) joined the group, a very good combination that helps their sound, especially live.
So “Live Attack” was recorded last year in Switzerland in one of their favorite places, Club 27. But the doors for the well-known reason (Covid) were closed and as I have said before in similar cases, this thing reminds me more of a rehearsal than a concert. The good thing is that the event lasted almost two hours and contains a lot of music material in contrast to last year’s release which did not last even an hour. There are many classic songs from the albums of the recent years, in fact from last year’s “Born To Perish” we count three tracks, the self-titled track that opens as well as “Rotten” and “Betrayal”. But the big moment I would say with certainty is that DESTRUCTION are playing for the first time after over 30 years the superclassic and popular “Reject Emotions” from the EP “Mad Butcher” of 1986. The reason they did not include it in their setlist for so many years (according to with Schmier) is that he needed two guitars to perform it properly. Now that he has another guitar player in the line-up (after the fans’ demand), he can do this. In fact, in Blue Ray, it shows scenes from the original video at the time with Harry and Oliver in their line-up, which makes it even more important. Otherwise we have “Nailed to the Cross”, “Armageddonizer”, “Mad Butcher”, “Sign of Fear”, “Release from Agony”, “Invincible Force”, “Bestial Invasion”, “Curse the Gods” and this ceremony comes to an end with “Total Desaster” song.
The band despite the general inactivity of the last two years seems to be in a very good condition, Randy Black’s drums are stormy, the guitar duo performs to the maximum and Schmier is the well-known giant we know and love.
Although I am not font of such releases, I have to say that this is a complete work – presentation of the entire career of the historic thrash metal band in excellent performance and, as a package, it is very satisfying as the blue ray (which I personally I am more interested in our time than a simple live CD) in addition to the concert it has a lot of bonus material, backstage scenes, behind the stage etc.
This is a good investment for the friends of the group. The rest should check it out. There are not many classic groups of this genre still standing in full form…
