“We’re AUTOPSY… and we play Death fucking metal”..! With these words, Chris Reifert introduces AUTOPSY’s appearance at Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago, a concert that was recorded and released as the American old school death metallers’ first official live album. The concert was recorded on March 7, 2020, just before the lockdown, and a few months later they released (without any exaggeration), eighteen Death Metal anthems with a total duration of just over an hour!
I do not think I should explain how huge a band AUTOPSY is and how much it has influenced hundreds of other bands, so I go straight to “Live In Chicago” which starts with “Severed Survival” from their self-titled debut album. The set list has an old-fashioned character with “Severed Survival” being honored with seven compositions and “Mental Funeral” with four, while the rest of the songs cover the AUTOPSY discography until the most recent full length of 2014 “Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves ». The sound has the necessary “decay” and brutality that characterizes the band and the rhythm section is thunderous with a demonized Chris Reifert playing drums and singing at the same while he often plays with the audience. The new song “Maggots In The Mirror” is a barbaric Death Metal torrent of one and a half minutes, while the concert ends with the cover of “Fuck You!!!” of BLOODBATH.
The giants, AUTOPSY, have released an awesome live album which could at the same time be considered as a compilation, as it includes some of their best songs with a sound that’s “sick” and “rotten” just the way we’ve got used to love it the last thirty-three years. The new song “Maggots In The Mirror” gives us a taste of their upcoming work, while at the same time it functions like a fine motive for the band’s fans who already have their discography to acquire the “Live In Chicago”. An old school death-stinking-metal release that justifies its title not only by the setlist but also by Wes Benscoter’s (SLAYER, NILE, KREATOR) amazing artwork.
