NYKTOPHOBIA may be only five years old, as they were formed in Germany in 2015, but that does not prevent them from being quite active, as this year (specifically on August 7, 2020) they return with their third full length album, entitled “What Lasts Forever”.
The album begins with a dramatic intro and then, the melody, combined with the blastbeats of the opening song “Echoes of the Past”, give us the signal for the melodic Death Metal frenzy that follows. The band throughout almost the whole album perfectly combines roughness and melody, with some Black Metal elements and the result could be described as a more brutal version of INSOMNIUM. Fast guitar riffs, drums like a machine gun and angry melodies demolish the listener. Tomasz Wisniewski’s voice changes subtly between deep screams and medium-high screams, while the excellent production gives a particularly charming solid sound to the record.
With “What Lasts Forever” I think the time has come for metal fans to embrace and recognize NYKTOPHOBIA’s talent and musical value. If you are a fan of melodic Death Metal, it is impossible to remain untouched after listening to this album and not be carried away by it. Also, for those who found the latest albums by INSOMNIUM and AMON AMARTH a bit more melodic and “catchier” than they should be, they can now find solace in “What Lasts Forever”…
