Earth, 2070. After a massive nuclear world war, dust from the explosions has covered the sun and the temperature has plummeted. The ashes from the explosions and fires have reached the stratosphere, to the point where there are no clouds or weather, such as rain, for it to be cleared. Temperatures are sub zero in the summer months and unsustainable in the winter.
The Canadian Melodeathsters transfer us into this post-apocalyptic landscape, returning after 8 years with the extremely dynamic, aggressive but melodic “Eradicate”. More dynamic, more technical than ever, with some Progressive touches, but also some Thrash elements. Reminiscent of early ARCH ENEMY, having the excellent Roxana Bouchard on vocals, but also THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER element on other parts. The riffs are highly melodic, the album moves on very fast speeds – they do not even slow down at the end (!) – but there are some more mid-tempo, groovy points as well, as there are in their previous albums. Many of the riffs they have written are highly catchy and can just stick to your mind for hours.
Based on this post-apocalyptic element (from the cover and art, to the lyrics, but also the music), “Eradicate” introduces some progressive elements as well (such as in “Lost” and elsewhere) and thus shows that it is a varied album that is not repeated at all. The production gives an industrial feeling in combination with the music, which in this case is also desirable (long guitar solos to play in the far background from beyond, a few scattered harmonics, repetitive riffs with eight-string guitars just to achieve the crazier desired sound and Roxana being reminiscent of a gynoid almost constantly- you can do a little digging on the term-).
Technically, all five members of the band perform their role very well, from the aggressive drums, to the well-tuned 8-string guitars with the extremely technical role and the awesome long-drawn solos, Damian Blake being a real robot on the drums and also the extremely technical bass coming out well enough and us being able to hear it all the way. All this ties in with the real roller coaster that Roxana is on the vocals and creates a crazy, frantic tone.
The Canadians succeed in taking us into the future, making us headbang a lot, introducing some new elements to their music from other genres and recording one of the least boring or uninteresting albums of the year of their kind. First listen to it and then see the Matrix. Or vice versa. Do not forget to do it though (both, I would say).
