Spain is not famous for it’s Black Metal scene, to say the truth. Some bands that come first in mind are TEITANBLOOD, ARGAR and LUX OCCULTA though DEVILTOOK is a fresh band whose members are also involved in numerous other acts like APOSENTO, MIXOMATOSIS, ITNUVETH. “At War With Gods” is their first and only, so far, recording.
Although DEVILTOOK is a new band, their style refers to the second wave of Black Metal the way it was shown by bands like CARPATHIAN FOREST, DARKTHRONE, to name some of them, so their declaration fits with reality. DEVILTOOK perform, traditional, elitistic, pure, raw Black Metal with fuzzy and primed guitars, lots of tremolo and blastbeats. There are also a few mid paced moments, some guitar melodies and a couple of cinematic samples but they are used as a tool to support the whole atmosphere. Lyrics, according to DEVILTOOK, are focusing in the lies of Christian religion and hymn any sort of anti religious matters and that’s a thing that Berserk, the singer, is reminding us with his high pitched Black screams. The only thing that is not retro is the mastering and mixing of the record which is modern and quite professional.
For all the early Nordic Black Metal nostalgics and the surrounding literature, “At War With Gods” is a good reason to take them back in the 90’s. On the other hand, if anyone feels like having a teenage introspection he should probably prefers to listen to the original recordings than trying to listen to a new and unknown band, without taking the risqué. The “satanized” ones check them out…
